What is there to say? It started off as a
personal business to foster the creation of a single program, dubbed
ConTest (Connection Tester) by some young developer who will not admit
he knows VB 3.0.
Now it is more of an unofficial front for
a few programmers, a few other people, and their dreams. All of us
being avid pursuers of fun, we are more or less disgruntled with the
current state of games in the industry, all of them being more or less
hashed out versions of the same thing, all of them attempting either
to make a buck, or to perfect a genre. The standards of PC gaming have
not changed in at least 5 years. Graphics have kept improving, but
gameplay hit the ceiling when Quake came out. Now all that is left to
pursue is realism, relationships, and the quintessential item with
larger numbers.
Where did fun go? What happened to the
games like Diablo, where people would willingly click themselves into
carpal tunnel? Have single player games all become film noirs, and
multiplayer games all become either inane slugfests or golden carrot
chases?
That is what we are here to find out,
even if we have to program a game ourselves that breaks the mold.
